Orrville Turf Project - Week 1, Day 4
Here's your daily panorama showing the field in it's current state.
Also of note is the new scoreboard that was installed last year. I noticed a crew working near it & went to investigate. What I saw was this..
Notice the lights coming out from the bottom? Those are new. If you recall from last season, when the sun set, the 10 advertising panels were almost impossible to see due to the lack of lighting. These lights will take care of that problem & give the scoreboard a nice finished look at night.
From the Contractor...
Maumee Bay Turf has been kind enough to send along updates as they progress through this project and it was agreed that this is information that the turf committee wants to share with the public, just to keep folks up to date with accurate information.
Here is their plan for the next week or so...
installation of perimeter drainage system will begin tomorrow and should take all of Thursday and Friday.field will be compacted and proof rolled by Friday June 15th. Burkey Excavating will be quitting a bit early Friday to allow Relay for Life to hold their event. curb cut (along inside perimeter of track) will transpire Monday or Tuesday. surveyors will be on site Monday or Tuesday to locate control points and stake for new goal post/soccer goal sleeve installations. Vasco Group will be on site early week to pour track event (long jump & pole vault) runways. installation of geotextile subgrade liner and flat panel system along with install of stone field base will begin Friday the 22nd or Monday the 25th.I know I'm repeating myself a lot...but it needs to be repeated...the project has begun but the fundraising is on-going.? Contributions can be mailed in care of the OHS Booster Club, or donations can be made online via PayPal.? RedRiderTurf.com has all the info.
The goal has not been met and fundraising will continue until that time.? When completed, this project will vault Red Rider Stadium into one of the nicest facilities in the state for a school our size.? In the last 5 years, we've seen new visitor bleachers built, new home bleacher coverings, new lights, a new scoreboard and now turf and track.? We're certainly a blessed and fortunate community to be able to provide a facility like this for the next generation of Red Riders.

Turf Update - Week 2 - Update from the Contractor
Below is an update from Brad at Maumee Bay Turf on what is going on this week and next.
As far as the financial aspect of the project...at last report, the project has just crossed over the $500,000 mark of committed funds.? That means we're close, but not yet at the finish line.? Thank you to those who have already given and to those considering it.? There is no such thing as too small of a donation...every bit helps.?
Head over to RedRiderTurf.com and donate today.
Here's the update on the project...sorry if you've already read this because I believe it was sent out to the Booster Club email list.
The subgrade and perimeter drain installations?are complete. The field and drains handled this week's excessive rainfall wonderfully - always good to see the drains perform well before stone base is installed. Curb cut went far better than expected and looks fantastic. B&K Concrete (from Marshallville)?will be on site today to install goal post sleeves, repair curbs and pour missing section of curb. We found a sleeve under the track so we saved the cost of a bore - always nice to see a gain ! Burkey Excavating (from Smithville)?will install geotextile fabric, flat panel drains and stone base next week - will take a full week. Thanks to Orrville Trucking & Grading for all of?their help, (fantastic stone price and a place to dump topsoil and broken concrete) - a huge help! Electricians will be in this week to install sleeves and field boxes for future track timing systems - thanks to Josh Klein at Delta Timing for his help laying this out. Turf was ordered yesterday (June 19th).The turf crew will be letting me know within week when they will mobilize - they are currently installing field for University of Arkansas.Vasco Sports Contractors (from Massillon)?will move in week of June 25th or after to pour field event (long jump & pole vault)?runways.? When they conclude, we will be ready for turf install crew to move in.? The turf install crew will let me know in next 7-10 days when they will mobilize as they are at the University of Arkansas finishing that project now.? There may be a brief one or two week lull in between base construction and turf install.Note how many local companies are being used in this project...many of whom are providing their services at a significant discount.? Great to see local companies supporting Orrville students.
Also neat to read of work being done to benefit the track program.? An automated timing device will be big in helping get back the district track meet that was moved away from OHS this year due to the overall condition of the track.

Turf Project - Week 4 Update: Track is Poured
Below you'll see pictures of the track being poured and also an update on the turf part of the project.
Remember, donations are still needed to fully fund the turf project.? Donations can be made online at RedRiderTurf.com or a pledge card can be printed off and your donation can be mailed to the OHS Booster Club.
Just to again clarify, the track replacement is technically not part of the turf project as the track funds are permanent improvement dollars while the turf portion is being paid for with private dollars.
The track work was done by VASCO Asphalt out of Massillon and the guys who did the work deserve a standing ovation for battling the extreme heat and getting the job done.
The asphalt will need to cure for 3 weeks and then a latex top coat and lane markings will be applied. The surface as it is right now is just like a freshly paved parking lot, but the top coat will give the surface it's sponginess.
Here's pictures of various parts of the track during installation of the asphalt layer.? The pictures of the excavated area of stone will be where the new long jump and pole vault runways will be poured, probably this coming week.

Turf Update
As far as the field goes, this week saw the final touches put on the stone base.
As I took photos of the track on Friday, it seemed like the stone base was pretty much done and is now ready for turf. The turf crew is currently installing turf at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School in Chardon and will come to Orrville immediately upon completion.
They just got started this past Friday at NDCL, so it will probably be 2 more weeks before turf installation begins in Orrville.
The new goal posts are sitting unassembled in the north end zone but wont be installed until the turf is laid down to prevent and damage to the posts by machinery working around the field.
Lastly, I think I mentioned before that the underside of the home bleachers were getting a fresh coat of grey paint...I finally remembered to get a picture of it.? Looks great, and it might not be the last bit of new when it comes to the bleachers.? Stay tuned on that one.

Turf Update - Week 7 - Bleacher Wrap Install Begins
The above?artist's rendering?made the rounds on the Orrville Alumni Association's Facebook page last week but this is the first I've mentioned it here. It's been in the works for a while now, but just a few weeks ago became official and installation began today.See below for more info on this product, and some updated turf pictures. What you see is a product called "Bleacher Jersey" and it's marketed and sold by a Massillon area company called Gameday Renovations.? They partner with Miller Weldmaster out of Navarre to produce the wraps which are made of vinyl.? They've installed their product at several Stark County high schools like Tuslaw, Massillon, Jackson, and most familiar to Orrville fans, at Northwest & Medina High Schools. It's purpose at Orrville is two-fold.? One is to provide and improved look to the back of the bleachers.? It's another renovation to the facility?just like the new bleachers, the new scoreboard and the new track.? It will also promote school?and?community pride.? The second purpose of the wrap?is to give recognition to the field naming rights sponsor, Serpentini Chevrolet-Buick.By this coming Friday or early next week, the finished product should be on display for everyone to see.? I think it's another great addition to Red Rider Stadium.? The facility has undergone quite a transformation and in my opinion, it's all been positive. In regards to the design itself...I'm sure we could ask 100 different people how they would have designed the bleacher wrap and we'd get 100 different answers.? Some would like it, some wouldn't.? I think the thing to keep in mind that this was a generous donation from Serpentini's to the turf project and this is the way they will be recognized for their generosity.? It's a great partnership, Serpentini gets community goodwill and some exposure to promote their business and their financial support helped the turf project happen.Yesterday started the tedious work of adding the details to the turf, but the crew continues working at amazing speed to get this project done.? As you'll see below, work was completed on the field numbers and they got started on the hash marks.? Each set of hashmarks (one on each sideline, and two down the middle of the field) has 80 strips of white turf that has to be cut and glued down.
Work will continue on that today and then move on to endzone lettering, the midfield logo and the soccer lines.
Once that is done, the rubber pellet infill will be sprinkled across the entire field....almost 400,000 POUNDS of infill will be added to give the field cushion. The last picture shows the field goal posts being installed.? Contrary to what I was told at the outset of the project, soccer goals will be separate and moved into place on days when there are home soccer matches.
That's all for now...please remember that we are still seeking funds to fully pay for this project which includes the field, the bleacher wrap, new fencing (to protect the investment) and money to construct a recognition space for the donors of this project that will also double as a space to honor past Red Rider football coaching legends.

A Season of Champions at OHS
We sometimes (all the time?) take success for granted at Orrville.? But this needs to be appreciated.? Can you remember a more successful season than 2011-12 in terms of the number of OHS athletic teams that have had successful and sometime history-making seasons? Let's review....
Fall Sports
The football team made the playoffs (regionals) for the 22nd time.
The boys and girls cross country teams each advanced a runner to regionals.
The soccer team won their first tournament match ever.
Winter Sports
The boys basketball team won their third straight district title and advanced to regionals.
The girls basketball team advanced to the district finals.
The wrestling team advanced two wrestlers to the state tournament.
The swimming program was again represented at the state swim meet.
Spring Sports
The softball team won their first OCC title and had the best season in school history.
The baseball team won districts for the first time since 2000 and advanced to regionals.
The boys track team won numerous invitationals, another district title and advanced to regionals this weekend at Lexington.
The girls track team won the OCC for the 2nd time and also advanced to regionals as a team.
***********
Wow.? Let that soak in.? For a school our size to have that kind of success across all seasons, I think is just amazing.?
That's 5 teams (football, boys basketball, baseball, boys track and girls track) that have advanced to regionals, with four of them being boys teams.? That's impressive in itself.
Can't recall a year where we sent 5 teams to regionals in any combination.? In 1994-95, we had football, boys basketball and baseball make regionals, which is rare enough...but to have four boys sports make regionals in one season is almost unheard of.
The Wayne/Holmes County area has seen it's share of success this year with Norwayne winning a state football title, Waynedale winning a state wrestling title and Hiland winning a state basketball.? Hiland baseball and West Holmes baseball are still alive and Orrville boys & girls track and Triway girls track are still making noise in spring sports so more success at the state level is possible.
Enjoy the pictures below of some of our champion teams this year.

Orrville Baseball Wins District Title!!
It's been a dozen years since the Orrville baseball program won a district title. That streak ended last night at Norwayne High School as the Red Riders rode the backs of dominant pitching and defeated Tuslaw by a 4-1 score. They will advance to the Massillon Regional next Thursday May 24th to face Orwell Grand Valley (the #1 seed from the Euclid District. Grand Valley was also the #2 team in all of Division 3 according to the final OHSBCA Coaches Poll.? The game will start at 2pm in the afternoon.? The field in Massillon is right behind the football stadium (click here for a map).
The other regional semifinal will pit Youngstown Ursuline against LaGrange Keystone.? The winners will meet Friday May 25th at 5pm for a trip to Huntington Park in Columbus and the State Final Four.
Back to the Riders run to a district title.? Pretty impressive that the Riders two starting pitchers in the district round gave up a TOTAL of TWO HITS in both games combined.? Juniors Trevor Kerr and Stuart Schley tossed matching 1-hitters against Norwayne and Tuslaw respectively to punch the Riders' ticket to regionals.
I don't know anything about Grand Valley, but I do know you can go a long way with good pitching, and it sounds like we have that.? Our offense has been grinding out timely hits too, and you need that too.
The last time Orrville won a district title in baseball was the year 2000.? They also won districts in 1995, 1996 and 1998.? Their best finish ever as a program was in 1976 when then finished as Runner Up.
The last time Orrville's football, basketball & baseball teams all made regionals in the same year was the 1995-96 school year. The football team went to the state semifinals, the basketball team won state and the baseball team made the regional semis.
Sort of hard to believe this team is two wins away from a trip to the final four.? Keep it up Riders.? Congrats to Coach Marshall and his team on putting Red Rider baseball back on the map.

Track: Midview Division 2 District Info
Here's all you ever needed to know about this weekend's district track meet at Midview High School in Grafton. This is the first year in a long time that the district will not be hosted at Orrville. Because of the condition of our own track and the ongoing construction of the new high school, it was decided to move the district to a new location.
Here's the tournament information page courtesy of Baumspage.com and here's the schedule of events and here's the entrants in each event and their seed times.
I think the Orrville boys and girls have good shots to finish high in the team standings, and in doing so, send a lot of athletes on to regionals and hopefully the state meet.? The boys regional will be held at Lexington while the girls will travel to Bedford.? This is the first time in a long time that the boys and girls teams will be split up at the regional round.
Good luck to the Orrville athletes and here's to continuing a great tradition that is the Orrville Track & Field Program.
If you're looking for updates from the track weekend, make sure you like me on Facebook and follow me on Twitter.? Pretty sure you don't need to sign up for either service just to view my posts/tweets, so don't be scared of it.? I'll be posting updates there as I get them.
OCC Meet
This is a belated congratulations but wanted to recognize the boys and girls track teams for their performance at last week's OCC meet in Lexington.? The OHS girls team (pictured above) won the meet and the boys finished 2nd to Lexington.? It was the 2nd time the girls had won the OCC in track, with 2008 being the first.? Congrats Coach Ayers & Coach Mosley and their staff for all their hard work.
That brings Orrville's total of OCC team titles to 9 (I think), and the breakdown is as follows:
Football: 1 (2005)
Volleyball: 3 (2003, 2004, 2009)
Girls Basketball: 2
Softball: 1 (2012)
Girls Track: 2 (2008, 2012)
Amazing to me, that 8 of our 9 OCC team titles have been won by girls teams.? Our "go-to" boys sports over the years of football, basketball and track have amassed a total of 1 OCC title.

'Team Up' to bring TURF to Red Rider Stadium
Remember when I wrote this two years ago? My dream of one day having turf at Orrville's Red Rider Stadium. Seemed like the biggest pipe dream ever at the time, right? But it appears that this "dream" is about to become a reality, perhaps as early as THIS summer!!
I'm happy to announce that a committee of Orrville citizens, alumni and fans, formed back in January of 2012 to explore bringing turf to the home of the Red Riders, has secured a large portion of the necessaary funds?thorugh a period of "silent"?fundraising.
Details
The project is now public, dubbed the "Team up for Turf" drive and you'll read about it in upcoming issues of OrrViews and The Daily Record.? As of the week of May 29th, around $440,000 has been pledged, paving the way for the start of?the project to?remove?the existing sod at Red Rider Stadium and install?an artificial turf playing surface as well as a new 8-lane track surface.? The goal of the entire?project is to raise $750,000 for the installation of an artificial turf field and to establish a "stadium fund" for future improvements.
It is hoped that the project will move forward in late June and work on the field will begin while the final donation are sought.? The plan is for the field to be ready for the first home game of the season (Week 2) vs. Triway.
First and foremost...let me be 100% clear...not ONE DIME of taxpayer money will be used to fund the turf portion of the project. This is a private fundraising effort with 100% of?the monies being privately donated from businesses & individuals.
The balance of the funds for the project will be sought from Orrville citizens, business owners and OHS alumni.
The track portion of the project was already slated to be done in the summer of 2013, but it was decided to do both projects at once, a cost savings of roughly $10,000-15,000.? The cost of the track replacement will be paid for with permanent improvement dollars.? The track was beyond it's useful life and in danger of becoming unsafe.? It's the main reason why Orrville did not host this year's OHSAA district meet.
Why turf and why now??
Simply put, Red Rider Stadium is in the middle of what will soon be a beautiful academic campus with all 3 buildings (elementary, middle and high school) being within walking distance of each other.? There is a need for a facility that can be used more often.? Currently, because of the condition of the grass at the stadium, only 15-20 events can be held there per year.? When you compare that to the costs?of the?constant upkeep that a grass field requires (mowing, fertilizing, watering, striping), the cost per use of the field is very high.
With a turf field, events can be held daily if need be, and in some cases, multiple events per day.? Imagine being able to hold a freshman football game on a turf field on a Thursday afternoon and then a varsity soccer game that evening, then a varsity football game on Friday night and a JV football game on Saturday.? Could our grass field hold up to that kind of use?? We were barely able to host the playoff game last football season due to the condition of the field.? With a turf field, this problem would be eliminated.
All levels of Orrville football (7th, 8th, freshman, JV & varsity) will be able to use the field without worry of the field falling apart, especially in the later portion of the season.?
I mentioned soccer above...and yes, this field will contain soccer lines and?soccer matches?will be held there.? The current soccer field (behind the Boys & Girls Club) does not have lights, and it's the only OCC soccer field that does not have the ability to host night games.? The support of the soccer program at Orrville could only increase with being able to host games at the stadium and in some cases, under the lights.? Student support would increase as well, and maybe participation in soccer too.
Another group to benefit from turf would be the OHS band.? With the construction of the new high school, the band has no practice space to rehearse routines before Friday night halftime performances.? With a turf field, they would have this space as well as being able to continue hosting the Orrville Band Show.
Sports like baseball and softball could hold preseason workouts on the turf during the wet Ohio spring weather.? Community events like the Smith Dairy Track Meet and the Relay for Life could take advantage of a turf infield as well as Orrville Boys and Girls Club events (tackle football, soccer, flag football, etc.).
There is also a potential to host OHSAA football and soccer playoff games, which would generate extra revenue for the athletic department as well as various school groups.
This is much more than just a football project.
The next step?
As mentioned above, support from the Orrville business community has gotten us a big part of the way, but we will not achieve this goal without the support of Red Rider Nation.? Just because you will probably see construction activity at the stadium in the next 4-6 weeks, doesn't mean that the project is paid for.? We need everyone's support to fully fund this project.? A website has been set up with more information and a link to donate via PayPal.? The website is http://www.redriderturf.com/.? There is no such thing as a donation that is too small.? Every bit helps us get closer to the goal.? There is also a Facebook page where we will be posting details about the project as it progresses.
If you're not the PayPal type, donations can be mailed to the Orrville Booster Club.
ALL CONTRIBUTIONS WILL FUNNEL THROUGH THE BOOSTER CLUB, MEANING ANY CONTRIBUTION MADE WILL BE TAX DEDUCTIBLE.
There have already been countless hours spent on this project by committee members and we would be nowhere close to this project becoming a reality?without the hard work of the committee...many of whom have helped in past fundriasing ventures (multi-purpose building, etc.).
Obviously, this will be the big Red Rider story of the summer, and I'll bring you all the details as they're released.? This is almost too exciting to write about.? Can't wait to see this thing progress.? Not that it matters, but this will be the first high school turf field in Wayne County, and one of the few public schools in the area to have turf.

Turf Update: Week 8 - Turf is DONE!..plus Fundraising Update
To this (on July 30, 2012).....\data\omega seamaster 007\GL001\2012-07-30+12.19.33.jpg)
I still have a hard time believing this is real, and an even harder time putting it into words how cool this is....but as of July 30, 2012, a completed turf field now resides at Red Rider Stadium...and in what is a highlight of the 4+ years I've been writing this blog...I can now say that Serpentini Field at Red Rider Stadium is now a part of the list of Northeast Ohio Turf Stadiums.? I made that list at least 3 years ago and I had hoped to add our field someday.? Now I can.? Again, pinch me.
What is so amazing about this project is how swift it has moved along, especially the turf piece.? It took just eleven days from the time the first roll of turf was installed at Red Rider Stadium, but that's all that was needed...thanks to a hard working crew and some dry weather.
From the day the first piece of grass was removed from the field until this past Monday when the turf was completed was only 7 weeks & 2 days.? Work on the field started on June 11th, and ended on July 30th. That's just amazing.
What exists now is simply one of the nicest fields anywhere in the state for a public school of our size, and a testament to the community of Orrville and the support the citizens, alumni and businesses have shown time and again.? I know of only?three other Division 4?public schools that have turf (Huron, Martins Ferry and Germantown Valley View)...and none can boast the 'campus' feel of their district like we can.
The best, or most satisfying part of this project was the fact that it was 100% privately funded.....everything being done at the stadium except for the track will be paid for with privately raised dollars.? This was a true grassroots effort from it's beginning in January.? This was done on a quick time schedule, but done well.? Smart people made smart decisions and hard working crews got this job done with pride.? Was great to see local companies used when possible.? Orrville Trucking & Grading provided stone for the base, B&K Concrete (Marshallville) did miscellaneous concrete work and Berkey Excavating (Smithville) did all the sod removal and field grading.? Truly a local project.? Local dollars & local contractors.
Here's an album I put together on the "Team up for Turf" Facebook page that shows the progress from the start of this project in June until now.? Here's a 2nd album with just panorama photos.? You don't have to be signed up with Facebook to see the photos.? Keep checking back there to see updated photos.
What's Next?
Now that the turf is down, work with re-focus on the track with the crew from VASCO back to put the latex topcoat on top of the new asphalt that was poured in late June.? The process is a 7-layer process that will only add 1/2" of thickness to the track.? Each layer must dry completely before the next layer is applied.? Once they finish that, the track will need to cure for 2 weeks and then they will apply the proper lane markings.
Work on the bleacher wrap from Gameday Renovations out of Massillon should be finished up by late this week or early next week....as well as new fencing around the perimeter of the track and stadium is in process as well.? The old fencing was really starting to show it's wear.? Again, both of these projects (the bleacher wrap and fencing) are being paid for by the funds raised by the turf committee.
Also part of the turf project is a permanent recognition space for all donors to the project as well as a space to honor past Red Rider coaching legends.? This will be located near the south entrance by the fence.? Currently there is a plaque honoring former team physician Dr. Reiheld....that will remain, but there will be 3 other plaques added to recognize former coaches Bill Shunkwiler, Mo Tipton and Bill McMillan.? Those 3 coaches represent 50 years of Red Rider football and account for 363 of the program's 596 all-time wins.
Turf Grand Opening
The first contest on the turf will be the JV football game between Northwest and Orrville on Saturday August 25th.? The varsity team will host Triway on August 31st and the soccer team will host their first home match on turf on September 4th.
A special night is being planned for August 31st to dedicate this field for the next generation of Red Riders...make plans to be there.
Fundraising Update
As of this past Monday, the turf committee is excited to report that just over $650,000 (new donor list has been posted) has been committed to this project.? It's been explained to me that the whole project (turf, grooming equipment, bleacher wrap, recognition space, etc.) will cost somewhere around $625,000-$645,000.?
Anything above that range will go to a replacement fund for the turf.? The field will last roughly 10-12 years until it will need replaced...and cost to replace will be several hundred thousand dollars.?
The naming rights that Serpentini Chevy currently holds will expire in 10 years, and the new naming rights sponsor ($100,000) coupled with money being raised right?now to replace the turf (hopefully another $100,000) will go a long way to paying for the 2nd generation of 'red rider turf.'?
It is the goal of the committee that the field not be a financial burden to the district in 10-12 years, which is why funds are being set aside now.? There likely won't be a large fundraising effort the next time around so that is why a push is being done now.?
Fundraising will likely cease on September 7th, and as mentioned above, all donors will be recognized on the plaque at the stadium, so?please help out if you can.? Our goal of $750,000 is still?within reach.? Visit RedRiderTurf.com today to pledge your tax deductible support to this project.?
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU....on behalf of the committee to the citizens of Orrville, OHS alums and especially the Orrville business community.? Your support is just amazing.

State Track Recap: 7 Red Riders named All-Ohio
Wanted to recognize the Orrville track program on another successful showing at the OHSAA State meet in Columbus.? The Red Riders sent down competitors in 7 events and placed in the top 8 in 5 of the 7.? A top 8 finish earns All-Ohio honors. Leading the way were field events where senior Lexi Jarrett finished 2nd in the Div. 2 Pole Vault with a jump of 11'6". That breaks her own school record and establishes a new Wayne County record. (the county record is 11'8" set by Chelsea Detweiler of Dalton in 2008).? The area record of 12'0" set by Stephanie Foster of Cloverleaf in 2010 still stands.? Jarrett finished 5th in last year's pole vault, making her 2nd place finish this year her 2nd straight All-Ohio finish in pole vault.
Fellow senior Stewart Turner Jr. finished 2nd in the boys long jump with a jump of 22' 11 3/4".? The winning jump was 22' even, meaning Stewart was just 1/4" from tying for first, and just 1/2" away from a state title.
On the girls side, senior Nicole Greegor capped an excellent career at Orrville with a 4th place finish in the girls 100m hurdles. This was her 3rd appearance at the state meet. She qualified for the 100 hurdles as a sophomore, junior and senior, and the 300 hurdles her junior year.
Also a senior, Drew Brenner finished 7th in the 300m hurdles.
Brenner also anchored the 4x200m relay team also consisting of Joel Zook, Elijah Coleman and Cody Weaver that finished 7th.?
So that's 7 Red Riders to leave Columbus with All-Ohio honors, with Brenner being a 2-time All-Ohioan.? All were seniors except for sophomores Joel Zook and Elijah Coleman.
Brenner capped a great senior season in which he earned All-Ohio honors in football and basketball as well as today's 2-time All-Ohio performance in track.? Pretty rare feat to be named a 4-time All-Ohioan in 3 sports in a single school season.? Guessing maybe Brent Steiner may be the only other recent graduate to be an All-Ohioan in 3 different sports in a single season. (Sam Reusser was a 3 sport All-Ohioan in 2010-11 in football, wrestling & track. Thanks to Coach Ayers for the reminder)? Add in his All-Ohio honor from this past football season and also his 2 All-Ohio honors last year in track and he's a 6-time All-Ohioan at Orrville.? Ashland U. sure has a good one coming their way.
I also want to mention Stewart Turner...he was a 3-time All-Ohioan last season in track, and made All-Ohio in both his junior and senior season in football at Orrville.? Add in this year's All-Ohio in the long jump, and he's also a 6-time All-Ohioan over the past 2 years.? So he was a 4-time All-Ohioan last year and Brenner did it this year.? Quite the accomplishment by both young men.
That's a wrap on another sports season at OHS.? The start of football practice is about 2 months away....won't be long.

Turf Update - Week 6 - Starting to take shape
I received an email from a fellow member of the turf committee when he saw the first pictures of the turf that was laid out this past Friday...and it simply said "it's starting to sink in now."? He was referring to the hard work the committee has put in and the generous giving that the community has done..and that this really is going to be the end result.? Just awesome.
That echoes my thoughts and the thoughts of many others about this project.? It's truly remarkable how quick this has come together...and when a project of this magnitude comes together this quickly, you worry about details being missed or corners being cut....but that's not the Orrville way...and it's shown in the folks working behind the scenes on this project.? It's being done quick, for sure, but it's being done the right way.? The Orrville way.
Onto business....
I thought maybe the turf crew would ease into this job, seeing that they were getting started on a Friday. I thought they'd get a few rolls of turf done, call it a weekend, and then start fresh on Monday.
Boy was I wrong.
As of Sunday afternoon, the ENTIRE FIELD was covered in turf. The 4-man crew worked all Saturday and Sunday, in addition to Friday...about 14 hours each day to get the field where it is now.
See below for some great pictures of what is shaping up to be not just a generic turf field, but a beautiful turf field, worthy of the tradition that has developed in Orrville over the last 50 years.
It has been neat to see the steady stream of folks dropping by the stadium to check out the progress.? I heard someone remark that if $1 could be collected for each passerby, this project would have long been paid for.
The work of actually rolling out the turf began bright and early Friday morning and by lunch time Friday, this is what it looked like.?It was about 30 yards of turf that was rolled out....in 5 yard strips that ran the width of the field.? A second 5-yard strip was laid over top and sewn together.? The completed 10 yard section was then flipped into place and pulled tight. Rinse & repeat until you have 120 yards of turf on the ground.? Not terribly complicated, but very tedious and extremely labor intensive.
By Saturday afternoon, this is what the field looked like.? Thanks to Mike Guster for the picture.? Click here to see the picture full-size & zoom in for lots of detail.

As you can see in that picture...by Saturday afternoon, roughly 36 hours after install had began, 100+ yards of turf had been set into place.? The sideline pieces weren't yet installed, but that would come on Sunday.
As you can see, the sideline section on the visitor side has been rolled out and as I was leaving, the crew was preparing to do the same on the home side.
If you notice the black line in the picture above, I'm told that's part of the soccer boundary lines.? Typically you see soccer lines that are yellow. But it was decided on black for this project, and personally I like it.? Black is a school color and it blends better with green too.
Here are two panoramas, one taken on Friday and one taken on Sunday that give an idea on how much progress was made this weekend.
Lastly, I put together a quick collage of these panoramas I've been taking, to show the field as it stood on June 11th with a full field of natural grass and how the field now stands with the grass removed, the field graded and with new turf just over a month later.? It's amazing really.\data\omega seamaster 007\GL001\orrvilleturfprogress+copy.jpg)
So...a lot has been done...but A LOT is left to do. The typical install takes 2 to 3 weeks, and we're just done with day number three.? Probably 10-14 days of work left.? Now that the turf is rolled out, the next big job will be to stretch the carpet tight and anchor it down and trim off the excess turf.? Once that is done, work will begin on the details of the field like hashmarks, yard numbers, soccer lines and the end zone lettering.? The field will then have a sand and rubber infill raked in to provide cushion.
As I mentioned in the last update...once the field is entirely finished, the track crew from VASCO will move back in to apply the latex topcoat to the track.? So the field will be ready for use, but no games or practices will be able to take place until the work on the track is complete.? It will be at this time that the stadium will be virtually off-limits because of the work on the track.
More to come....but man is this awesome to see. ?

Orrville Turf Project - Week 1, Day 3
I love sharing these pictures with my readers, but several times already I've had to stop and remind myself that THIS IS HAPPENNING...in ORRVILLE!!? We WILL play Triway on September 7, 2012 on a turf field.? Is that amazing or what? It's a testament to our community and the support of Red Rider alums all over the country.? Life takes us all in many directions, but we're all still Red Riders.
I don't have an exact number, but I think that among schools our size in the entire state of Ohio, there's less than 10 that can boast a turf field.? The fact that we're going to be able to do this with 100% of the funds being privately donated speaks volumes about this special community.
On to the pictures... (but don't forget to head over to RedRiderTurf.com to pledge your support today).
The first two pictures show the removal of the old goal posts.? I'm told these posts were made by former Red Rider videographer Ron Coppa as he was a welder during his time in the Navy.? These posts were installed in the summer of 1995 back when Dan Stultz was kicking field goals for the Riders on his way to Ohio State.
Not sure on the useability of these posts now that they've been ripped out of the ground. Would be nice to see them used at the middle school field, but since most games will be played at the new turf field (and the fact that field goals aren't a specialty of middle school teams), they might not be needed.? The new goal posts at the turf field will be ones that double as goal posts and as soccer goals.
Here's a shot of the progress on the south end of the stadium where all of the existing grass has already been stripped away.
And here's a shot of the west side of the field, again, it's pretty much stripped of all the existing sod.
Here's where progress was at around noon today.? That's just in front of the home sideline, so around the 40-yard line in football speak.? The trackhoe loads up the truck and off he goes.? Not sure where they're dumping this, but I think it's north of town somewhere...maybe at the landfill on 57 north of 585.?
Lastly, this picture gives an idea of just how far down the crew had to dig to get rid of that crown that has built up at midfield over the years.? If I had to guess, I'd say it was at least 18" of dig between the existing sod and the subgrade.? Amazing to think that from sideline to midfield, players were actually running uphill, and from midfield to sideline, running downhill.
And here's your panorama of the day. It's only been 2 days since the first one of these I did, but you can already see a big difference.
More to come...

Orrville Softball Clinches OCC Title!
The Orrville Red Rider softball team put a wrap on their first ever OCC title tonight, beating rival Wooster 9-2 in front of a packed Mizer Field. They improved to 12-0 in conference play and 18-3 overall. It's only the 2nd OCC title for any Orrville spring sport (girls track won the OCC in 2008) and one of just a handful of team conference titles since joining the league in 2003. I know football has shared an OCC title and we've won at least one in girls basketball and volleyball each.? But it's been slim pickings other than that.
Thanks to softball parent Lisa Kauf for the great photo.?
Stats
In the 12 OCC games this year, the Riders have outscored opponents by a combined score of 128-15.
Just look at thest results:
Mansfield Senior: 30-3 and 24-1
Mansfield Madison: 5-0 and 5-2
West Holmes: 9-0 and 15-2
Clear Fork: 11-1 and 3-2
Lexington: 1-0 and 8-2
Wooster: 8-0 and 9-2
They have two games with 2nd place Ashland next week standing in their way of a perfect run through the OCC....and they have a shot at scoring 200 runs this season.? I have them at 190 runs scored through 21 games (9 runs per game average).
To the victor go the spoils
And now for some politicking...it would be a real shame of head coach Craig Johnson didn't win OCC Coach of the Year and Daily Record Coach of the Year. He should get some consideration at the district and state levels as well in my opinion.
I'm sure plenty of players will garner some postseason honors and they deserve every last one of them.
District Bracket
Hard to believe this team was only good enough to nab a 4 seed at the upcoming Creston district, but that's all the respect they received.? Here's the district bracket.? The Riders will open tournament play on May 10th at 4:30pm against the Dalton/Hillsdale winner.? The game will be played at Orr Park.
Congrats again to the Riders, their coaches and fans on a real big accomplishment.? Here's to a clean sweep of the OCC and a deep tournament run.
In this 2011-12 school year of so many area teams winning state titles (Norwayne in football, Waynedale in wrestling and Hiland in basketball), wouldn't it be sweet for an Orrville team to add their name to the list....in softball of all sports?
